PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Attending court for the first time

A practical checklist for your journey, arrival and hearing day.

Court Guide · Sources checked 8 September 2026

Start with your hearing notice

Check the date, building, case number and whether you must attend in person. A court can use several buildings, so do not rely on a familiar court name alone. Keep the notice and the court’s contact details together.

HMCTS currently advises arriving 30 minutes before the time on your letter, unless the court gives you different instructions. Your case may involve waiting. Plan childcare, time away from work and your return journey accordingly.

Get ready before leaving

  • Bring your hearing letter and the documents needed for your case.
  • Check the venue’s access arrangements and ask in advance for any support you need.
  • Check court security rules before packing food, drinks or medicines.
  • Use the court’s published address to plan transport and allow for disruption.

When you arrive

Go through security and tell court staff which hearing you are attending. Follow staff directions about where to wait. Silence phone calls and notifications in the hearing room.

If you are unsure about a practical arrangement, ask court staff. For advice about your case, speak with your legal adviser.
