Match the help to the problem
Different organisations offer different kinds of help. Legal advice, representation and practical support at court are not the same service. Tell the organisation the subject, location and any deadline so it can assess whether it can assist.
For general advice, Citizens Advice has local and national services. Law Centres and LawWorks clinics may offer help with particular topics or eligibility criteria. Use their own directories to check current coverage and appointments.
Practical support without a lawyer
Support Through Court helps people dealing with civil and family proceedings without a lawyer. Its role includes practical and emotional support; it does not provide legal advice or represent you as a solicitor would. Local, telephone and online arrangements are published by the charity.
Legal aid and housing duty advice
Legal aid depends on the matter and the relevant eligibility rules. Search the funded category rather than assuming every solicitor accepts legal aid. If you are at risk of losing your home, the HLPAS service has a separate advice and court representation route regardless of financial circumstances.
When making contact
- Mention any court date or urgent deadline first.
- Describe the type of problem and the help you need.
- Check location, appointment method and eligibility.
- Ask what documents to bring and whether an interpreter or access arrangement is needed.
- Use the organisation's own contact route for private case details.
