Identify the order you need advice about

An application asks the court to make an order. N244 is used for many civil applications, but not every request uses that form. The relevant procedure, any existing directions and the particular application determine the steps required.

The official N244 guidance explains how to describe the order requested and the reasons for asking. Court staff can help with practical administration but cannot choose legal arguments or tell you whether the application will succeed.

Check notice, evidence and the hearing request

The form asks about hearing arrangements and the evidence relied on. Read the current guidance and applicable court directions before completing it. Different rules can apply to applications by consent, on notice or without notice; these are not interchangeable labels chosen solely to reduce a fee.

Keep existing deadlines in view

An application does not by itself mean an existing hearing is cancelled, enforcement is paused or a deadline is extended. Read any order the court makes and obtain advice if you need an urgent change.

Practical checklist

• Correct court and case number.
• Current order or notice relevant to the request.
• Appropriate evidence and any draft order required.
• The correct application fee or fee-assistance route.
• A copy of the completed application and proof of submission.
