Use the contact named in your witness information

If you are called as a witness, read the notice and information sent to you. The police, witness care unit, prosecutor or person calling you can explain the practical arrangements relevant to your attendance. Tell the contact promptly if a problem could prevent you from attending.

Ask about support before the trial

Explain disability, communication, safety or other support needs in advance. The official witness guidance describes available support and how special measures may be considered. Availability depends on the case and any decision required; a court facility listing is not approval for a particular measure.

Ask about a familiarisation visit or support at the venue where appropriate. Check the correct entrance and reporting point; avoid assuming that a general waiting room is the arranged witness area.

Prepare for the day

• Bring the witness information and anything specifically requested.
• Keep the relevant contact number available for travel disruption.
• Allow time for security and possible waiting.
• Check the official process for claiming permitted witness expenses.
• Follow directions about discussing evidence, phones, photographs and recordings.
