PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Employment tribunal preparation for employees

Prepare a workplace chronology, identify your documents and check Acas, ET1 and tribunal directions before taking the next step.

Identify the issue and time limit

Keep the relevant decision, contract, payslips, policies and messages. Note the dates of the events and any employment ending. Different claims have different rules, and time limits can be affected by early conciliation. Use current Acas guidance and seek advice promptly.

Separate workplace and tribunal steps

A grievance, appeal to your employer or settlement discussion is not the same as starting a tribunal claim. Check whether Acas notification is required and keep the certificate details. Read the ET1 guidance before submitting a claim.

Plan for evidence and communication

Make a chronology, identify possible witnesses and preserve relevant documents lawfully. Do not access an employer’s systems without permission. If a claim proceeds, follow the tribunal’s directions on disclosure, witness statements, adjustments and hearing arrangements.
