Use the contact for your case
Keep the police reference and the contact details given by the police, witness care unit or prosecution service. Ask how updates will be provided and who to tell about safety or communication needs. An emergency or immediate threat needs emergency services, not a directory enquiry.
Ask about giving evidence
Read the witness information and tell the named contact early if anything makes attending or giving evidence difficult. Support, interpreters and special measures have different processes and may require a decision. Confirm the arrangements that have actually been agreed.
Find practical and emotional support
Victim Support and specialist organisations may help whether or not a case reaches court, within their scope. The Witness Service offers support connected with attending court. Support services do not control the investigation, prosecution or verdict, and their role differs from that of a legal representative.
Understand compensation and review routes
Compensation, an insurer claim, criminal injuries compensation and a civil claim are distinct processes with different rules. Official victim information explains relevant rights and routes. Check deadlines and eligibility rather than relying on local crime statistics or another person’s experience.
